There is never a dull moment in Bordeaux ! The city’s historic and cultural charm never fades, taking on a different hue as the seasons change. Autumn is already here, but La Belle Endormie (the Sleeping Beauty) is far from falling asleep. To discover the city from a different perspective, we have put together a short list of walks and activities to explore Bordeaux and fully immerse yourself in its unique identity.
A Walk Through the Saint-Michel District: A Blend of History and Cultures
When looking at Bordeaux from afar, one landmark immediately catches the eye: the tall bell tower rising above the city like a true lighthouse. Historic landmarks of the Saint-Michel district, the spire and the basilica are iconic monuments open to the public.
Following several years of renovation work, the Flèche Saint-Michel, standing 114 metres tall, offers exceptional panoramic views over Bordeaux. A must-see attraction for anyone looking to gain a new perspective and discover the city from above.

After enjoying these breathtaking views, take the time to visit the basilica and venture into the lively, distinctive neighbourhood surrounding it. With its many bars and restaurants, shops offering Oriental flavours, and the cosmopolitan Marché des Capucins, there is plenty to delight your taste buds !
The surrounding streets, including Rue Carpenteyre, Rue des Cordeliers, Rue de la Fusterie and Rue des Faures, reflect the diversity of traditional trades that contributed to the prosperity of the neighbourhood and Bordeaux’s port.
The Left Bank Quays: Walking Along the Port of the Moon
Bordeaux’s quays are particularly popular with locals, whether on foot or by bike. Once closely connected to the Port of the Moon, they were used to transport goods arriving through maritime trade along the Garonne River. Today, they have become an essential place to stroll along the city and enjoy its heritage.
With their wide pedestrian areas and cycle path, the quays invite visitors to wander while travelling back through centuries of Bordeaux history. They also offer a privileged view of the magnificent Place de la Bourse, one of the most photographed spots in the city.

You can also stop by the Foire aux Plaisirs funfair at Place des Quinconces (open until 1 November), enjoy a nature break at the Jardin Public via Cours Xavier-Arnozan, browse the repurposed former port warehouses, or end your walk with a tasting at La Cité du Vin!
Also worth discovering along the quays :
- CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art
- Cap Sciences for family-friendly science activities
- Laser Quest Bordeaux
In short, this walk opens the door to a wide range of activities and can be enjoyed all year round.
The Right Bank: From Pont de Pierre to Pont Jacques-Chaban-Delmas
We often hear about the Left Bank quays, but the Right Bank is just as worth exploring! To discover Bordeaux from a different perspective, cross the Pont de Pierre and follow the Garonne River towards Pont Jacques-Chaban-Delmas. This is an ideal walk for enjoying beautiful views of the city’s historic façades while discovering a neighbourhood undergoing a major transformation.
Along the way, Parc aux Angéliques offers a true escape into nature. In autumn, the trees turn shades of gold and copper, while the paths running alongside the river invite you to slow down. With its riverside walks and panoramic views of the Left Bank, it is the perfect place to get some fresh air and enjoy the season.
As you continue towards Pont Jacques-Chaban-Delmas, you will discover another side of La Bastide, where former industrial spaces sit alongside new cultural venues and lively social spots. Take a detour to Darwin, located in a former military barracks. Street art, socially conscious initiatives, dining areas and terraces make it the perfect place to extend your walk with a drink or a delicious bite to eat.
And if Bordeaux’s autumn weather proves unpredictable, why not enjoy a film at Mégarama Cinema, located on Quai de Queyries, close to the route ? It is a great alternative for sheltering from the rain and ending the day somewhere warm, without giving up the pleasure of a day out.
Also worth discovering on the Right Bank:
From the Grand Théâtre to the Cathedral: Shopping and Heritage in the Heart of Bordeaux
Bordeaux can also be explored through its shopping streets, with their beautiful façades, lively squares and historic monuments. For this walk, start at the Grand Théâtre, one of the city’s most iconic architectural landmarks, then head along Rue Sainte-Catherine, one of Europe’s major pedestrian shopping streets.
From shops and well-known brands to charming side streets, there is something for everyone, whether you are looking for a shopping spree or simply a leisurely stroll. At the intersection with Cours Alsace-Lorraine, continue towards Place Pey-Berland, where Saint-André Cathedral stands.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, the cathedral impresses visitors with its monumental scale and Gothic architecture. Right next door, Pey-Berland Tower, its separate bell tower, usually offers exceptional panoramic views over Bordeaux’s rooftops after a climb of 233 steps.
Please note, however, that visits to the tower are currently announced as exceptionally suspended. Remember to check access arrangements before your visit.

Finish your walk by passing Bordeaux City Hall, housed in the Palais Rohan, a former archbishop’s residence dating back to the 18th century. It is one last opportunity to admire Bordeaux’s heritage before returning to the lively city centre.
A Nature Escape at Parc de l’Ermitage in Lormont
Need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city centre ? Head to Lormont, on the Right Bank, for a walk that makes you feel as though you have left Bordeaux behind without actually going far away. Parc de l’Ermitage Sainte-Catherine is a vast 28-hectare natural park developed on a former industrial site.
In autumn, its trails, hillsides and wooded areas are transformed by changing seasonal colours. The lake, with its green waters, provides a particularly pleasant setting for a peaceful nature break away from the urban bustle.
But the park’s real highlight is its panoramic view over the Garonne River and the Bordeaux metropolitan area. From the heights, take the time to admire the scenery: the river winds its way beneath the hillsides, while Bordeaux can be seen in the distance. It is a refreshing change of scenery, ideal for taking photographs and discovering another side of the region.
Practical information: The park is free to access and is listed as open to the public at all times, subject to exceptional closures. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as some paths have steep sections.
